Hassan Ayariga was part of an army of National Democratic Congress supporters and government officials who thronged the airport to welcome President John Mills from the US after a routine medical check-up.

The PNC leader in broad smiles cheered President Mills on when he [president] jogged at some point to demonstrate how strong and healthy he is after the nine-day check-up in the US.

But Hassan Ayariga has come under some attack from party members.

The General Secretary of the PNC, Bernard Mornah told Joy News his phone has not stopped ringing as party members, one after another, call and in the most “uncharitable” manner express their disgust with the gesture by their leader.

They accuse him of showing divided loyalty by that singular act.

But Hassan Ayariga has played down such criticisms. He told Joy News he has also received countless calls from party faithful lauding his gesture.

He said the rumours of the president’s death prompted him and many others to go and welcome him [president] at the airport, adding, he went to the airport to receive the president of Ghana and not the president of NDC.

By his act, Hassan Ayariga said he had deepened democracy in Ghana and helped to build bridges between political parties.

He also dismissed assertions he is fronting for the NDC.
