Founder of the ruling National Democratic Congress, former President Rawlings, yesterday charged Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, to take the necessary steps to fight the cancer of corruption which has engulfed the current administration in the event of becoming the next president after the upcoming December polls.

Mr Rawlings, who appeared certain of an Akufo-Addo victory in the December polls, expressed deep regrets about the fact that corruption was eating too deep into the fabric of the country, with the resources of the nation not being used for the benefit of the people.

He therefore charged Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure judicious use of the nation’s resources to meet the basic needs of the people and ensure the promotion of their welfare under his presidency.

Yesterday was indeed a moment of history making at the Ridge residence of the former president when he held open discussions with Nana Akufo-Addo on a variety of issues, all geared towards national development.

Nana Akufo-Addo, in the company of Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, NPP National Chairman, Fred Oware, NPP 1st National Vice Chairman, was at the former president’s office on a courtesy call.

The two agreed on the need for collaborative efforts to safeguard the nation’s peace and stability, by particularly ensuring that the upcoming December presidential and parliamentary elections take place in an atmosphere of peace.

Former President Rawlings noted that the historic meeting between him and Nana Akufo-Addo would send out a strong signal to supporters of both the NPP and the NDC that the nation’s democracy had come of age, and so there was the need for high level of tolerance, co-operation and unity in the pursuit of the national interest.

He also stressed the need for all to remain vigilant at the polls, and ensure that the nation goes through free and fair elections on December 7.

Top among the concerns of Mr Rawlings were how the NPP Presidential Candidate will fight the cancer of corruption, tackle the basic needs of the people by ensuring judicious of the nation’s resources and ensure the safety of members of the ruling NDC under his presidency.

Mr Rawlings, who disclosed he would take active part in this year’s electioneering campaign, appealed to Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure the safety of members of the NDC under his presidency.

He noted that it was the fear of going into opposition, and the uncertainty of what awaits them, that had given rise to the nervousness of the ruling party in its outlook.

The NDC founder demanded an assurance from Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP that when they return to the corridors of power after the December polls, they would ensure members of his party enjoy some peace and justice.

Nana Akufo-Addo assured Mr Rawlings and members of the NDC that they would have nothing to fear under his presidency, stressing that he would always ensure the people of Ghana, irrespective of their backgrounds, feel secure at all times, with their personal lives not being in danger.

The NPP leader said he did not see any reason why a change of power from one political party to another should pose a threat to any group of people, adding that he would be committed to all aspects of the welfare of the people.

“Come what may after the December elections, we should all collaborate to ensure the nation’s peace and stability. There is nothing for anyone to be afraid of under my presidency. I will ensure good governance that will secure the collective interest of the nation,” Nana Akufo-Addo assured.

The NPP Presidential Candidate added that there was better future ahead of the nation, where there would be more constructive engagement for Ghana to continue to show the way in good governance on the African continent.
