If Konadu was disqualified due to errors why not Mahama – Karbo

Photo Reporting: Nana Agyeman Konadu RawlingsIf Konadu was disqualified due to errors why not Mahama – Karbo

The former National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Abaryifa Karbo says John Mahama would be asked to step down if it is established that the clerical errors which made him president had material effect on the outcome of the elections.

According to him, if the clerical errors admitted by the Electoral Commission (EC) in court are anything to go by, then the ultimate beneficiary must suffer for it.

Anthony Karbo was commenting on the ongoing substantive hearing of the Election Petition before the Supreme Court on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

Presidential candidate of the NPP in the 2012 elections, Nana Akufo-Addo and two others have petitioned the court to challenge the legitimacy of President John Mahama.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, key witness for the petitioners is being cross-examined by lawyers of the EC which is the second respondent in the case.

The EC in its pleadings has admitted the irregularities which occurred in the elections were clerical errors which should not affect the outcome of the elections.

However, Anthony Karbo on Ekosii Sen found the position of the EC very intriguing and hypocritical.

He said if the same EC found it necessary to disqualify Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings from contesting the 2012 presidential elections due to errors in her forms, why did it [EC] declare John Mahama president when there were errors.

"On the basis of errors, Konadu was denied her Ghanaian right in the Constitution to contest in an election of this country" he bemoaned.

He said the NPP’s pursuit for justice is not an attack on voters but "an attack on the process, sanctity and integrity of the 2012 elections".

Anthony KarboThe former NPP Youth Organizer said the EC which was touted as one of the best has in 2012 misused the tax payers money to perpetuate an illegality.

"I get upset that after spending GHC260 million to conduct an election they [EC] comes to tell us that all these errors are clerical errors and so we should allow it to go. What a country are we [living] in" he queried.

Anthony Karbo was of the conviction that the Supreme Court will not legitimize the irregularities in the country’s electoral system in the face of the substantial evidence before it.

"Ghanaians must know that the court case is not about the self-serving interest of Akufo-Addo, Bawumia and Jake; it is about Ghana".
