I’m Committed To Peace - Akufo-Addo
03 June 2012
The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has urged the Ghanaian clergy to speak out against the politics of hypocrisy and double standards. The flagbearer argued they undermine the virtues of truth, openness and transparency, which are vital for any functioning democracy.
Nana Akufo-Addo said this when he addressed the regional council of churches in Wa last Saturday to climax his campaign tour of the Upper West Region.
“The church should hold all parties equally accountable for the little infractions that threaten the proper working of our democracy,” he said. “No party or persons should be seen as sacred cows who are above criticism.”
“Otherwise we give some people a blank cheque to do as they please and this is inimical to the smooth operation of our democracy," Nana Addo said.Nana Akufo-Addo wondered why the President, Prof. J.E.A Mills has neither condemned nor expressed regret over all the incidences of violence that have been perpetrated by National Democratic Congress (NDC) goons against NPP people in Chereponi, Akwatia and Atiwa. He told the clergy that such silence from the President only emboldens the perpetrators of these acts to continue to perpetuate these anti-social acts.
Explaining his "all die be die" statement, Nana Akufo-Addo said that "all die be die" is certainly not and cannot mean a call to arms. He said he was only drawing attention to these brazen acts of violence that were being perpetrated by NDC people against NPP people, and that if nothing was done about them, the NPP people will be compelled to defend themselves and the democracy that Ghana has chosen to embark upon. "All die be die is not a statement of aggression" he emphasized.
He promised that if by the grace of God he becomes president of Ghana, the rule of law shall be truly operational. He assured the clergy, that he is a true Christian from the bottom of his heart. He said, the only thing that he doesn't do is to wear his Christianity on his sleeves and shout about it at the roof tops. This according to him is because he believes firmly in Jesus Christ's statement that "not all those who say lord, lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven." Akufo-Addo emphasised that, for him, religion is a personal devotion and commitment to God. "It is a matter of the heart. And God knows, that I am devoted to his course", he added to applause from the members of the clergy.
In a related development, Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that the rule of law will be truly operational when by God's grace, he becomes president. Akufo-Addo gave this assurance when he addressed a church service in Mampong-Ashanti, to mark the 75th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Catholic Church in Mampong on Sunday. Akufo-Addo, who was the guest speaker at the forum, urged the Catholic Church to pray for peace in this year's election and specifically to pray for members of the Electoral Commission, so that they will conduct the election in a free and fair manner that will make it possible for both winners and losers to accept the verdict with equanimity.
Akufo-Addo, who was representing former president Kufuor at the function, asked the Catholic Church to pray for his victory in this year's election, so that he will inherit the throne that Kufuor had occupied before and to continue with his good works, which is being derailed by the NDC government. He was accompanied by senior members of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, including Dr. Richard Anane, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, MP for Bantama and Mrs. Elizabeth Agyemang, MP for Oforikrom.
Akufo-Addo has since begun a tour of the Brong-Ahafo Region.**
