NDC Get Set For Congress
Leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is gearing up to hold series of conferences leading to its national delegates’ congress.
Though no specific dates have been put to the various events lined up to take place beginning next month, the NDC has set the period of March-May 2014 to undertake biometric registration of members across the length and breadth of the country, possibly including branches abroad.
According to party sources, they would then proceed to re-run branch elections nationwide in July 2014 followed by what it described as an extraordinary national congress to adopt constitutional amendments sometime in August 2014.
After that, the party plans to hold conferences in all 275 constituencies across the country between September and October 2014, to elect constituency executives.
This is expected to be followed by conferences in all 10 regions to elect regional executives in November 2014.
It would be followed by the election of a presidential candidate or the endorsement of the candidature of incumbent President John Dramani Mahama to lead the party in the 2016 general elections.
Even though no date has been set for the national congress, it is likely to take place in December 2014 or sometime early 2015.
Already, some party faithful are said to be doing underground works to contest for various positions in the party right from branch, through constituency, regional to national levels.
One key position which seems to have generated some level of interest is that of the position of National Chairman, which is currently being occupied by Dr Kwabena Adjei aka Wayoo Wayo.
This was in view of the claims that National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kofi Portuphy, is preparing to contest for the position, as well as Dan Abodakpi, Ghana’s immediate High Commissioner to Malaysia who is on the verge of throwing his hat into the ring.
Others are manoeuvring to contest incumbent General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah for his position.
Central regional Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, Bernard Allotey Jacobs has also indicated his preparedness to contest for the Chairmanship position in the region, while Sidii Abubakar is eyeing the position of National Youth Organiser currently occupied by Ludwig Hlodze.
The coming days are therefore expected to witness a lot of activities in the ruling NDC with more people likely to declare their intention to contest for one position or the other.
