“It is sad that the only Secondary School for the Deaf in the country has no computer laboratory and no computers whereas even primary schools in both public and private schools are all using computers”, he said.

Mr Sackey said this during the annual celebration of the International Day of the Deaf, which had been earmarked by the United Nations to draw the attention of policymakers to issues pertaining to the well being of deaf people in the society.

The Day which was under the theme: “Equal Access to ICT”, was marked at the premises of the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD).

Mr Sackey lauded the critical role computers play in the society adding that computer literacy had become one of the basic requirements needed for possible employment in any organization.

“Without computer literacy, a person cannot cope with daily life as it has become an integral part of modern life”.

Ms Rosemond Blay, Director, Special Education Division, Ghana Education Service, said deaf people were capable of undertaking any task, hence the need to educate them from the basic to tertiary levels.

“We are aware that there are at least three deaf PHD holders and many masters holders who are deaf and serving in the country”, she said.

She appealed to the deaf community not to allow their disability to become an impediment in their ways but strive to actualize their dreams.
