Awulae Atibrukusu IIIWe can't be bribed; it is our right to have the vehicles - House of Chiefs replies

14 November 2012

National House of Chiefs has warded off the conception that the vehicles presented to them by government, was a calculated attempt to bribe chiefs to vote for the President, John Dramani Mahama in the December 7th elections.

details

President Mahama on Tuesday presented 12 Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles to the Regional and National Houses of Chiefs to facilitate their daily activities.

The gesture has been criticised by a section of the public and some politicians, particularly those aligned to the opposition NPP, who say the timing of the presentation was wrong.

But speaking Wednesday on Adom TV’s Badwam program on Multi TV, Vice President of the National House of Chiefs Awulae Attibrukusu III said, the presentation was government's response to the several pleas from the chiefs for help, to enable them discharge their duties effectively.

According to Awulae Attibrukusu, the previous Rawlings and Kufour administrations also presented 12 Mitsubishi Pajero vehicles respectively, to the House during their tenure of office.

Awulae described the gesture not as a privilege but their deserved right like other heads of institutions, who have been given vehicles.

The Paramount Chief of Lower Axim Traditional Area in the Western Region also denied claims that President Mahama made an unspecified cash donation to the chiefs.

He said rather, the President presented bottles of schnapps to the chiefs as custom demands whenever one was paying a visit to a chief.
