Otumfuo Honours 110 Teachers

A TOTAL OF 110 teachers selected from highly deprived areas in the ten regions of the country have been honoured by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during a colourful traditional ceremony held at the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The event which is the second edition of the Otumfuo Teacher’s Award saw the beneficiaries taking home giant television sets among other prizes.

Addressing the large gathering, the Asantehene praised the teachers for their pivotal roles in nation building.

Describing teachers as pillars in Ghana’s transformational process, Otumfuo stressed the need for the populace, especially those in responsible positions to support them to succeed.

The awards initiated last year by Otumfuo, saw traditional leaders, teachers, top businessmen, students and people from all walks of life attending.

The Asantehene noted that without teachers the country could not develop as expected. He therefore entreated teachers to sustain their good work so that the country’s future would be bright.

The king who turned 62 on Sunday stressed that teachers in rural areas needed to be encouraged by all and sundry to continue serving the country.

The Otumfuo Teachers Award is a brainchild of the Otumfuo Charity Foundation in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service. It is geared towards rewarding excellence in the teaching profession.

The award scheme is the Asantehene’s own way of assisting teachers that have shunned city life and all the enjoyment that goes with it by accepting postings to deprived areas in the country where there is no potable water and electricity.

The commendable programme is also aimed at honouring and motivating the teachers in such areas to continue helping with the proper education of rural children.

The Asantehene also hopes that the awards scheme would motivate other teachers to accept postings to rural areas in the near future to the benefit of mother Ghana.

This year’s event was supported by several corporate institutions in the country notably telecommunication giant, Tigo and Ghana Commercial Bank.
