Akufo-Addo meets German Chancellor, Angela Merkel

Nana Addo & Chancellor MerkelThe 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, on Monday honoured an invitation to meet the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Angela Merkel in Berlin, the German capital.

The NPP leader, who is currently in Berlin on a working visit, met with Chancellor Merkel, who is also the Chairperson of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the NPP’s sister party in Germany.

he two political leaders met for half an hour and discussed a wide range of issues, with the centrepiece being the development of Ghana/ German bilateral relations.

TThey also discussed the importance of a peaceful election in Ghana to the country's stability and its greater ramifications to democracy and freedom in Africa.

Nana Akufo-Addo reiterated the NPP’s commitment to the peace and stability of Ghana and the country's democratic project, and the party's efforts to ensure a free, fair and transparent election this year.

The NPP leader assured Germany's leader that his party appreciates the mutual benefits in strengthening and building upon the bilateral relations between the two countries.

In line with his vision to transform the Ghanaian economy, Nana Akufo-Addo said he has taken particular interest in the German manufacturing model. Germany is the biggest industrial economy in Europe.

He said, an NPP government, under his leadership, would intensify the bilateral relations with priority interest in the area of manufacturing.

He said Ghana has a lot to learn from Germany and Ghana would be grateful for any assistance in that regard.

Also, in line with his programme to building a society of aspirations and opportunities for every Ghanaian, Nana Akufo-Addo told the German Chancellor that education and skills training for the youth were key policy priorities, and those are also areas that Ghana could learn greatly from Germany's experience. Germany is a world leader in vocational training and apprenticeship programmes for the youth, boasting a large and productive army of artisans ho have been driving the industrial machinery of the European country for at least the last two centuries.

The NPP leader also indicated to the Chancellor his keen interest in the German manufacturing model, skills training for artisans and apprenticeship programmes for the youth.

Chancellor Merkel was very positive in her response to the issues raised by Nana Akufo-Addo. She indicated Germany’s willingness to continue to cooperate with Ghana to help create the necessary growth and development for Ghana and her people.

The occasion also provided the opportunity to discuss African and international issues. Here, too, the Chancellor stated Germany’s willingness to act as a sincere partner for Africa in our continent's quest for lasting peace, democracy and development.

On Sunday, Nana Akufo-Addo met with Prof. Dr. Horst Kohler, former President of the Republic of Germany, who hosted Nana Addo and his delegation in the former's private residence in Berlin.

Former President Kohler expressed to Nana Addo his willingness to facilitate massive investment by the German business community in the Ghanaian economy to help create jobs and enhance the living standards of the Ghanaian people.

Nana Akufo-Addo’s delegation includes the NPP National Chairman, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Minority Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and MP for Weija, Hon Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, NPP Director of International Affairs, Mr Charles Owiredu, and Press Secretary to Nana Akufo-Addo, Herbert Krapa.
