The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has rubbished a Daily Graphic publication claiming that Ghanaian specialist doctors are set to receive nearly 5,000 new Ghana cedis under the troubled Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).
The publication also claimed that in spite of the huge pay being offered by the new salary structure, the GMA is pushing for more than the 4,800 new Ghana cedis proposed under the SSSS.
The paper claimed the GMA’s rejection of the proposed pay is largely because the projected pay levels will bridge the gap between doctors’ salaries and senior nurses with master’s degrees.
The publication has, however, provoked GMA deputy General Secretary, Dr Frank Serebour, who did not mince words in describing it as “a very stupid publication. ”
“It was a very stupid publication and for me I think that Daily Graphic should bow their heads in shame for doing what they have done,” Dr Serebour lashed out. “They don’t even know the figures and the truth of the matter is that nowhere has this figure come up. ”
“There is a problem and if there are problems lets all try and solve the problem instead of using lies and propaganda and trying to turn public sentiments against doctors. ”
Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission, described by the striking doctors as incompetent, has said it has decided to take up the doctors’ grievances at the level of compulsory arbitration.
The arbitration process is scheduled for Monday and will have in attendance officials of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and executives of the Ghana Medical Association.
But Dr Serebour told Citi News that the GMA has no intension of terminating the nearly two-week-long strike anytime soon and cannot be forced to do so.
“The council that called the strike has not met and once the council has not met no singular individual can call off the strike.
“As we speak we have not called off the strike and I do not think that we can call it off today or tomorrow,” Dr. Serebour charged.
