The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has revealed that his decision not to go for a review after the Supreme Court verdict was to prevent unnecessary problems for the country.

He said though he was disappointed for losing by a narrow margin, he had to conduct himself well because the country was very tensed and any misstep on his part could have brought unnecessary problems for the country.

The former Attorney General made these statements on Wednesday on an Accra based private radio station, Starr FM.

‘’I felt that I should conduct myself well because the country was very tensed and any misstep on my part could bring back unnessary problems for Ghana’’.

The leader of the opposition New Patriotic Party incurred the wrath of some party members when he announced to the world immediately after the Supreme Court verdict that he would not seek review of the judgement though he disagreed with it.

But in his recent interview he defended his action that it was in the best interest of the country.

‘’We are all interested to make democracy work in Ghana and not that people stumble and get into problems. So I thought it was extremely important that as soon as possible, I should try and make a contribution in bringing the tension down in the country and let people know that we should all go about our businesses as usual. I don’t think it was my duty to create a situation whereby there will be problems in Ghana because of my personal ambition.’’ He said.

Nana Akufo-Addo, together with his running mate in the 2012 presidential election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the party’s Chairman at the time, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, challenged the results of the December presidential election on grounds that there were too many irregularities that marred the sanctity and integrity of the final results declared by the country’s Electoral Commission.

They prayed the country’s highest court to nullify the results.

A nine-member panel of Justices, led by William Atuguba, however, upheld the victory of President John Mahama after the long legal battle.
