Swear in Amissah-Arthur Monday after vetting – Min. Leader
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has advised that the Vice Presidential nominee, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, be sworn in on Monday, August 6 after vetting to allow him a day of orientation.
He argued this will enable the fresh vice-president to take up his responsibilities on Wednesday right before President John Evans Atta Mills’ burial ceremony, which is scheduled from August 8-10.
According to the Minority Leader, the nominee’s swearing in which would be done in Parliament, will however be preceded by a debate and subsequent approval of the Appointments Committee’s report, which should be submitted to the House after the vetting on the same day.
It, however, means that Parliament may be sitting for an extended period on Monday if all these would have to play on as the legislator is suggesting.
Hon. Mensah-Bonsu was of the view that “if President [John] Mahama would want his vice by his side during the funeral of the late president which starts on Wednesday, then Mr. Amissah-Arthur should be sworn in on Monday so he be taken through some orientation on Tuesday, so he can start taking up his responsibility on the Wednesday.”
Parliament’s Appointment Committee has scheduled Monday, August 6 to vet the immediate past Governor of the Bank of Ghana, who was on Tuesday nominated by President Mahama as his vice-president.
The vetting would be done in public.
