Rawlings to be expelled from NDC?
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amalibah has noted that former president Rawlings faces possible sanctions if he is found guilty of breaching the party’s constitution.
Sections of the NDC’s constitution demand its members to be faithful and remain loyal to the party. Chapter 6, article 39 for instance stipulates among other things that a member of the NDC should work to ensure unity and cohesion and defend the party.
Meanwhile Mr Rawlings has hardly observed these regulations since the party he founded assumed office in 2009. His persistent criticisms of the party did not cease even after the demise of the late President Mills-led administration.
On Saturday, Mr Rawlings endorsed his wife as flagbearer of the breakaway National Democratic Party (NDP) and did not fail to use the opportunity to predict doom for the NDC in the December polls. He also rehashed his allegations of corruption among government functionaries.
Asked whether Mr Rawlings’ conduct constituted an infringement on the party’s constitutions, the NDC lawyer said that would be a matter for the National Executive Committee (NEC) to determine. He indicated a crunch meeting has been called to discuss the issue.
“Until then (the conclusion of the NEC meeting), it is wrong for anybody to jump into conclusion that he (Rawlings) has infringed upon the rules of the party,” he stressed.
Lawyer Amalibah was however quick to add that if the former president is found guilty of breaching the rules of the party, he could be removed as founder, reprimanded, fined or suspended for a specific period of time, reprimanded or fined.
“The party rules apply to all and sundry and does not discriminate,” he stated, “whether one is a founder or one is a cleaner at the party headquarters…”
