A failed Vice-Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Alhassan Haruna of Metropolitan TV has expressed disappointment that he was not chosen to partner Nana Akufo-Addo for the 2012 general elections.
Mr Alhassan, like Alhaji M.N.D Jawula and Ambrose Dery, was reported to have been shortlisted for the position but the party’s flag-bearer chose economist Dr Mahamudu Bawumia whose selection was acclaimed by the NPP’s national council on Thursday.
Mr Alhassan Haruna told Joy News he was invited by Nana Addo and told that he (Nana Addo) had decided to maintain his 2008 ticket, that is, run with Dr Bawumia.
“He indicated that he doesn’t want to make any change, and I trust his judgement… not that none of us was incapable but he felt that in the light of what is going on he will prefer somebody he is more comfortable with.”
Mr Alhassan, despite his disappointment at having not been selected declared his support for Dr Bawumia and Nana Addo, stressing “we are hundred percent behind him”.
“As for disappointment, certainly, there would be a little bit of it,” he admitted.
On his part, Ambrose Dery, Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Lawra Nandom, was thankful to those who supported him.
He told Joy News he has “no negative feelings towards,” Dr Bawumia.
Ex-Ghana FA chairman, and Lepowura M.N.D Jawula told Joy News although he is “naturally disappointed” that he was not select, he was happy Dr Bawumia, a man he calls “my younger brother” was selected.
Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Evans Aggrey Darko, maintained the re-nomination of Dr Bawumia is “not a risky venture”.
He said northern and Moslem balance is relevant in the Ghanaian politics as well as experience and competence of the candidate to help in the area of education, health and jobs.
“I was thinking that it is important if you have a product which is already known, it is not too difficult to market it, all that you need to do, perhaps this time, is to pursue much more aggressive advertisement policy and so on.”
