Illiterate NDC members will be major beneficiaries of Nana Addo’s free SHS policy - Kofi Jumah
The NPP Member of Parliament for Asokwa constituency, Maxwell Kofi Jumah said the ruling NDC will be the biggest beneficiary of Nana Akufo-Addo’s free Senior High School (SHS) policy.According to Jumah, majority of the NDC members are not educated therefore if the NPP is voted into power, they would have an opportunity to go to school free.
He was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday.
The NPP flag-bearer has provided an estimated cost of GH¢78 million of the free SHS policy in its first year of implementation.
The cost according to Nana Addo includes tuition, boarding, feeding and all the other charges for the 2013-2014 academic year.
But the NDC has challenged the feasibility of the NPP’s flagship free SHS policy- stating that it is just a ploy to win power.
The NDC maintained improving access and infrastructure to the schools should be prioritized than making SHS free.
However, Kofi Jumah said the ruling party must seek the interest of its illiterate members first than its self interest.
He noted that it is important for the populace to be equipped with knowledge through literacy to make them more discerning and independent minded to be able to differentiate between propaganda and the truth.
Kofi Jumah added that it is obvious poverty and ignorance are ramifications of illiteracy which he says is an essential component of underdevelopment.
The Asokwa MP posited that government is against free SHS because it wants to manipulate the minds of Ghanaians with it vile propaganda to retain power.
He said the ruling party has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that its priority is the payment of dubious judgement debt to its cronies and not to secure a good future for the nation.
Kofi Jumah reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to delivering a literate country under an Akufo-Addo presidency and called on Ghanaians to support its efforts to rid the country of illiteracy.
