What've I Done...Everywhere You Turn To Afari Gyan, Afari Gyan, Why?
"My God, it is becoming very nauseating. Everywhere you turn to [you hear] Kwadwo Afari Gyan… What have I done? I don’t know. That is an insult to the other members of the commission. We are seven and one person alone can have his way?”
These are the words of a clearly exasperated Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC).
He was speaking at a public event organized by the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) in Accra.
The EC boss wondered why he has been singled out for public persecution. He pointed out that there are seven other members on the commission thus it is an insult for one to suggest he (Afari Gyan) holds sway over them.
Whiles calling on those spearheading the crusade against him to "please cease”, the EC was emphatic that he is not in the least bit intimidated and will discharge his constitutional duties as mandated by law.
“Why personalize it, why single me out? Maybe the intention is to do harm to me, maybe to frighten me. Let me say that I will not be frightened. I will do my work, the commission will do its work in accordance with the understandings of the rules and regulations under which it operates,” he assured.
Touching on accusations that the EC is in bed with government, Dr Afari Gyan derisively said the commission must be "special prostitutes" to have been able to allign itself with virtually every government.
"Every time we are accused of being in bed the government; during the Rawlings time, we were in bed with the government; in the Kufuor regime, we were in bed with the government; now we are in bed with the government; we must be special prostitutes to do that," he said.
