Dr Busia Is 100
The centenary celebration of the birth of Ghana’s second Prime Minister, the late Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia, is scheduled to start on Thursday, 11 July.
A statement issued by the Busia Foundation International on Sunday and signed by its Public Affairs Director, Anane Agyei said the year-long centenary celebrations would begin with documentary and forum on the life and work of the African legend at the African Regent Hotel on Thursday, July 11, 2013.
The statement said several distinguished personalities including former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Amma Busia and Prof. Abena P. A. Busia would speak at the forum. Members of Busia’s administration would also be in attendance.
It further said the celebration of Dr Busia’s works would be held at the Calvary Methodist Church, Adabraka on Friday, July 12. “Dr. Busia is fondly remembered for his advocacy for the rule of law, civic education, good governance and his establishment of the Ministry of Rural Development,” it noted.
On the academic front, it said Dr. Busia, an Oxford scholar, was the first African Professor and Department Chair at Ghana’s Premier University, Legon.
He held chairs at several universities in Europe and the Americas. Dr. Busia was born on July 11, 1913 and died on August 28, 1978 aged 65, six years after his administration was toppled by a military.
He served as Ghana’s Prime Minister from1969-1972 and remains a great source of inspiration to leaders and scholars across the world. The centenary celebration is under the theme, “Moving The Vision Forward.”
