If insults kill; Nana Addo would have died long ago - Nana Akomea
31 July 2012
The Communications Director of opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea says government cannot attribute the sudden demise of the late President John Evans Atta Mills to insults and criticisms.
According to him, government should come clean on the actual cause of death of the late President and stop diverting attention from the core issues.
Akomea's comment is in reaction to claims by the National Security Advisor, Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah that the late John Mills nearly resigned from office due to the incessant verbal abuse directed at him.
Brigadier-General Nunoo-Mensah on Radio Gold, an Accra based radio station disclosed that the insults and vitriolic attacks got to the president so much that he at some point contemplated resigning from office.
He (President) held on because of the encouragement he Nunoo Mensah gave him, he stated.
But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Nana Akomea indicated that if the claims by the National Security Advisor is anything to go by, then the flag-bearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would have died long ago.
Akomea noted that, Nana Addo deserves a national award considering what he says are the daily dosage of insults which emanated from both government officials and its rented press who he said propagated absolute falsehoods about his [Nana] private life.
He recounted how the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for political expediency, maligned Nana Akufo-Addo after the infamous wikileaks which alleged the NPP flag-bearer was an ardent smoker of Indian hemp.
The NPP Communications Director also cited how government appointees subjected Nana Addo to public ridicule at the recent campaign launch of Nii Lante Vanderpuye at Odododiodoo and yet the presidency found nothing wrong with it.
Nana Akomea challenged the government to point out what anybody from the opposition have said about the late President which they considered disparaging to corroborate the claims being made by Nunoo-Mensah.
To him, most of the comments against Mills were nothing but constructive criticisms against his [Mills] public record.
The NPP Communications Director added that the most disparaging comments about the late President health and mental status came from within the NDC and not the opposition.
He also bemoaned how government has flouted its own directive to mourn the late President for a week after his passing.
Nana Akomea maintained that, the NPP has suspended all its programmes in respect to the memory of late John Mills.
