Former Local Government Minister, Samuel Ofosu AmpofoAdjei Kojo demolishing is a humanitarian catastrophe – Ofosu Ampofo

27 January 2014

Former Local Government Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has described as a “humanitarian catastrophe” the recent demolishing exercise at Adjei Kojo near Tema, a suburb of Accra.

details

The Tema Development Corporation (TDC) together with armed police and military men on Tuesday demolished about 150 houses, leaving hundreds of people houseless.

The Corporation accused residents of encroaching on its lands but the affected residents maintain they legitimately bought the lands from the chiefs in the area.

The TDC has since been condemned for the inhuman manner with which the exercise was undertaken. The Member of Parliament in the area, Irene Naa Torshie Addo is also leading a class action to demand justice for her constituents.

Party executives of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tema have also called on President John Mahama to as a matter of urgency relieve the TDC Managing Director, Joseph Abbey of his post.

On his part, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, demanded an immediate halt to the demolishing exercise.

“The demolishing should have been carried out with a human face but living women and children at the mercy of the weather is very pathetic”, he bemoaned.

According to him, those affected are “victims of circumstance” because TDC is to blame for not preventing people from encroaching on their lands.

The former Local Government Minister therefore called for a meeting of stakeholders to settle the issue amicably.

In the interim, Ofosu Ampofo noted that “governance is about people therefore government will ensure the basic necessities of the people are met”.

Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has built tents in the area to house the displaced persons.
