Struggling to end violence against women
25 November 2012
"Millions of women and girls around the world are assaulted, beaten, raped, mutilated or even murdered in what constitutes appalling violations of their human rights," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
"We must fundamentally challenge the culture of discrimination that allows violence to continue."
Grassroots efforts around the world are underway. They include an initiative to fight sexual harassment at the epicenter of the Egyptian Arab Spring. Protests to change Irish abortion law. And a network to protect women from rape in Liberia. Meet the extraordinary people working for change.
