Aliu Mahama to be flown abroad – Korle Bu CEO
14 November 2012
Doctors at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital are working around the clock to stabilize former Vice President Aliu Mahama's condition so that he might be fit to travel abroad for medical treatment according to hospital CEO Prof Nii Otu Nartey told Joy News.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story Wednesday, Prof. Otu Nartey debunked rumors that the former Vice President had passed away.
He expressed surprise at the news of Mahama’s death, saying, “the former vice president is still alive, and we are working very hard to make sure that we get over this difficult stage.”
Alhaji Aliu Mahama has been on life support at the Cardio Centre of the hospital for about a week now.
Though Nartey maintained that the former Vice President is in “critical condition,” he added that a “team of doctors are working on him; we hope he will pull through”.
The CEO who would not talk about the nature of Mahama’s condition but confirmed that he is suffering from a “breathing problem.” Doctors are working to help him breathe without the support of a machine.
He said the hospital has been in contact with hospitals abroad and he is certain that Mahama could soon be flown to Germany or the UK for treatment.
Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, a former hospital administrator and lecturer at the University of Cape Coast Medical School, explained that some people who are put on life support do survive, while others fail to make it even after several years, depending on their condition.
He said that in situations where the patient is unable to improve, the doctors weigh the decision to discontinue the live support in consultation with the family.
He further explained that in cases when a person clearly cannot survive, he or she is given a faith-based form of life support.
He also called on the media as well as the general public to respect the privacy of the former Vice-President and his family.
