Mahama: If NPP Wants To Win Northerners' Votes, They Should Select Bawumia As Leader To Face Me
11 November 2012
President John Mahama has challenged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to make a northerner their flagbearer if they are serious about improving their electoral fortunes in the three regions up north.
The president threw the challenge to support his claims of lack of proper recognition for northerners by the main opposition NPP.
According to the President, people from the north have had enough of playing the deputy role at the Presidency citing the vice presidential role of former Vice President Aliu Mahama and himself as an example.
Speaking at a mini rally in Zualerigu on Saturday, when he resumed his campaigning tour of the Upper East region after suspending it for three days to attend to the victims of the Melcom Disaster in Accra, the President said if the NPP wants votes from the northern part of the country, then they should put up Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as their flagbearer to face-off with him.
He added that unlike the NPP, the NDC gives equal opportunity to all irrespective of ones background.
“Our brother Aliu Mahama was Vice President for 8 years. I was Vice President for 3 and half years. For almost 12 years, we have tasted Vice Presidency. It’s no longer exciting. It’s no longer what we want...They want to win here, they should put him in number one and let the two of us contest and then they will get something from here,” the president said.
