Rawlings-Akufo Addo meeting was a façade - Adu-Asare
11 October 2012
Member of Parliament for the Adentan Constituency, Kojo Adu-Asare has cast doubt about the genuineness of the meeting between former President Jerry Rawlings and New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.
According to him, Mr. Rawlings has a mysterious character which is not only unpredictable, and he is also capable of pulling a surprise at any time.
It came as a surprise Thursday when news broke that the flag bearer of the opposition NPP had paid a courtesy call on former President Rawlings at his Ridge residence in Accra.
The rather unusual visit was according to the NPP to discuss issues bothering on the election with a firm commitment to ensuring a peaceful elections in December.
The former president on his part asked Nana Akufo-Addo to assure him of the security of members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) should he be voted to power as president.
But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Kojo Adu-Asare expressed shock at the latest development describing Mr. Rawlings as an “an enigmatic character".
According to him, it will be a big joke for anyone to predict the actions and inaction of Jerry Rawlings ahead of the December polls.
Adu-Asare contended that, God might have spoken to the former President for him to have forgotten the resentment he [Rawlings] felt for the NPP.
He also described the meeting between the former President and Nana Akufo-Addo as a “façade for political expediency”.
The Adenta MP recalled how under the erstwhile Kufuor administration Mr. Rawlings was barred from all military installations in the country and his diplomatic immunity revoked because the then NPP government alleged he[Rawlings] was planning to stage a coup.
“These things were playing in my mind when I heard them [Nana/Rawlings] speak and you could also feel Rawlings was finding it difficult to speak” he added.
The NDC man indicated that Nana Akufo-Addo should have taken the opportunity to render an unqualified apology to the NDC founder for what he did against him [Rawlings] in the past.
Adu-Asare said coming events casts their shadows therefore the NPP should not be in jubilation about the issue.
