If anybody thought that former President Rawlings recent appearances at NDC functions were an indication that he will lead the party’s campaign as he has done in previous elections, the person must be wrong.

Mr Rawlings made this disclosure in an interview with Joy News’ Beatrice Adu on the sideline of a lecture delivered by Fetus Mogae, former President Botswana, on credible elections.

“I will support her as I do, you know, [to] a good number of other candidates,” he replied when Beatrice asked if he will support the wife.

He attempted to explain why Mrs Rawlings would leave the NDC to join the NDP: “To be quite honest, when you’ve walked in the shoes that she has been through since 79 etc, you might probably do exactly what she is doing. However, I believe the decision has not finally been taken and we all may have to sit down and examine whether she should or not.”

Mr Rawlings also counseled the wife that it would be “wise” for her to resign from the NDC if she really want to bear the flag for the NDP.

Pollster Ben Ephson has suggested that NMrs Rawlings would not make any significant impact in the 2012 elections without the husband’s support, but the former president, after questioning the credibility of Mr Ephson’s polls, simply said “we just have to wait and see”.

On whether Mr Rawlings himself will throw his weight behind the NDP, he stated frankly, “I will support any party with a high level of credibility and integrity, and that I know they (NDP) have.’

However, he was quick to add: “That doesn’t mean I am leaving the NDC either.”
