CJ Creates New Appeal Courts
Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood has created new Courts of Appeal for the Eastern and Northern Corridors of Ghana with effect from October 2013, the next legal year.
A statement signed by Justice Alex Poku-Acheampong, the Judicial Secretary and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Monday, said the Court of Appeal for the Eastern Corridor, which would be located in Koforidua, would serve the Eastern and Volta Regions of Ghana.
“The Court will sit one week in a month to hear appeals from the Circuit and High Courts of the two regions, as well as other statutory bodies whose decisions are appealable to the Court of Appeal,” it said.
The statement said the Court of Appeal for the Northern Corridor that would be located in Tamale would serve the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions (three regions of the North).
It said the court would sit for one week in a month and hear appeal cases from the Circuit and High Courts of the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions and other statutory bodies, whose decisions are appealable to the Court of Appeal.
The statement said all court users and the general public in the above-mentioned regions are to take note and comply accordingly.
“In addition, all parties in the above-mentioned regions that intend to file appeal processes with the Court of Appeal during this legal vacation must do so with the Regional Administrative Officers of these two newly-created courts so their cases can be heard in October when the new legal year commences,” it said.
In another development, the Chief Justice has authorized the establishment of a High Court in Winneba with effect from October 1, 2013.
The court, to be located in the New District Court House in Winneba, would deal with all High Court cases with the exception of indictable cases.
In this direction, the statement said the Chief Justice has ordered the transfer of all cases at the High Courts of Cape Coast and Agona Swedru, which emanated from Winneba and catchment areas, to the new High Court, Winneba so that parties do not travel long distances to file their cases.
Additionally Circuit Court ‘B’ at Ho is to be converted into a District Court with effect from Tuesday, October 1, 2013 on the directive of the Justice Wood, the statement said.
The statement said the Tema District Court “Community Centre” would also be inaugurated on Monday, September 2, 2013 to deal with sanitation and motor cases, as well as, all other District Court cases, including cases to be prosecuted by JUPOL.
