The President John Mahama says the ruling National Democratic Congress has the best track record on education and must be retained in power.

He was speaking to students in the Volta Regional capital, Ho, where the party is expected to launch its campaign, later Thursday.

Education remains one of the major issues ahead of the 2012 campaign with the opposition New Patriotic Party promising a free Second High School education.

The party has also promised to adopt a teacher first approach in its policy on education whilst creating an educated citizenry.

But President John Mahama in a subtle reaction said if ever any party deserves to be in power on account of its achievements on education, that party is the NDC.

He said the NDC government introduced the GETfund which has been the major source of financing educational infrastructure in the country.

According to him, apart from the first senior high schools built under the erstwhile Nkrumah administration, a chunk of the schools were built by the first NDC administration.

He said the then NDC government under ex-president John Rawlings delivered more than 100 senior high schools across the country.

In addition to that, the President said all the regional polytechnics were built by the NDC.

President John Mahama said if the party is retained in power, it will establish another university in the Eastern Region having already established one each in the Volta and Bono Ahafo Regions.

He said it will solve the major problems facing the polytechnics and turn them into degree awarding institutions.

Meanwhile, the NDC is getting ready to launch its manifesto today.

MultiTV’s Gifty Andoh Appiah, who is present at the Jubilee Park in Ho - venue for the launch - said the momentum is already building up for the occasion.

She said the road leading to the venue is awash with NDC party paraphernalia with organizers setting up for the big occasion
