50% Of Graduates Not Likely To Get Jobs - VC
Former Director of the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER) and now Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey has said that about 50 percent of university graduates are likely not to find jobs after their national service.According to him, Ghanaians continue to face unemployment problems because government policies over the years, have not properly addressed the issues.
“For twenty years, we have always said that unemployment deserves greater attention in policy and that government policies are also not likely to lead to any major job creation simply because those policies are designed for a free market economy, but here the market is not really free.
"There are too many structural constraints that cannot be erased simply through policy.
“But I know that 50% of students who leave our universities will not gain employment for about two years after national service and about 20% of that will not find jobs for about three years and these are the kind of figures we, in this country should be concerned about”.
He was speaking at the launch of ISSER’s report on the state of the economy.
Professor Aryeetey suggested that in solving the problem, there is the need for a proper industrial policy that will address the issues perpetually. The Vice-Chancellor said that with the current problem, many university graduates will be unemployed for a while.
