Government will initiate moves to make public service attractive- Vice President
Vice President John Dramani Mahama has stated that government would continue to provide conveniences and logistics that would make the public and Civil Service attractive to Ghanaians seeking jobs.
He however suggested to managements and workers to carry out self-appraisals that would pave way for the government to implement the right incentives and other forms of motivation to spur them on.
Vice President Mahama was speaking to Ghanaian journalists after receiving a honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration from the Ekiti State University in Nigeria as part of the 17th Convocation and 30th anniversary of the University.
The conferment by University (formerly Obafemi Awulowo University) was in recognition of Vice President Mahama’s leadership qualities, service to the nation and strict adherence to democracy, good governance and rule of law.
Vice President Mahama urged managements and leaders of various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to re-introduce the attendance book system and institute award schemes for hard working workers to promote high productivity and efficiency.
He said though good remuneration and incentives could catapult productivity, self appraisal and dedication to duty are also instrumental in promoting productivity and called on public servants to re-examine their performance to merit government’s investment and support.
The Vice President said the recognition would inspire him to initiate and collaborate with other stake holders to promote unity and development and called on all and sundry to live up to their duties and responsibilities.
He dedicated the degree to God for giving him the talent to serve, former President John Jerry Rawlings for recognising exposing his talents by making him a Deputy Minister for a start and later a substantive Minister.
Vice President Mahama also dedicated the degree to President John Atta Mills for giving him the platform to become Vice President, his parents for nurturing him to become an international icon, his wife Lordina for her tremendous support and the people of Ghana for supporting him to blossom into a political servant.
He was accompanied by his wife, Mr Alex Segbefia, a Deputy Chief of State, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, a Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.
