NPP accused of playing ethnic card against Mahama in Northern region
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has come under fire for allegedly inciting ethnic sentiments against President John Dramani Mahama in the Northern region.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba constituency, Donald Dari Soditey, claims members of the NPP are circulating information suggesting the Brifos in the region will not be spared by Gonjas, with whom they have a long standing quarrel, if John Mahama is elected President.
The Sawla Tuna district is dominated by the two ethnic groups which have been involved in communal clashes in the past.
The MP, who was launching his re-election bid, also chided the NPP running mate, Dr. Mahmud Bawumia for statements he made suggesting the NDC uses Northerners like hoes on a farm and throws them away after the farming season.
The NPP parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Naa Nongiri Vugu, told Joy News the claims of the NDC MP for the area were baseless, and mischievously designed to cause disaffection for the NPP’s campaign.
He said the NPP had never sought to rely on ethnic divisions and tensions in the area to win votes.
