Accra fishermen embark on demo
Members of the Canoe and Fishermen Association of Ghana have embarked on a demonstration to protest what they claim are unhealthy fishing practices.
The angry fishermen cited the continuous practice of light fishing as well as pair trawling which they say is destroying the industry.
These bad fishing practices were a major campaign issue in the 2008 election, with then candidate John Mills promising to fight the canker.
In a petition, the fishermen called on the government to honour its promise by implementing laws against such bad fishing practices.
The group threatened to march to the Castle but were stopped by police personnel, Joy News’ Nana Agyei reported.
Deputy Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia is said to have received the petition at the Independence Square on behalf of the president and reiterated government’s commitment in fighting against the bad fishing practices in the country.
