A leading member of Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings (FONKAR) Ernest Owusu Bempah says the NDC Chairman’s letter to President Mills has vindicated former President Rawlings’ claim that the government is made up of “greedy bastards”.
In the run up to NDC congress held in Sunyani in July 2011, Flt. Lt. Rawlings accused President Mils of being surrounded by what he termed “greedy bastards” who are looting the state.
Owusu Bempah recounted how Rawlings warned President Mills to be wary of such people but this advice apparently fell on deaf ears as people perceived to be loyal to the incumbent president castigated the ex-president.
Commenting on a letter written by Dr. Kwabena Adjei to President Mills in which the NDC chairman expressed his concerns about how to resolve creeping factionalism in the ruling party, Owusu Bempah stated on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday that it is too late to write such a letter.
Owusu Bempah said prior to the NDC congress in July last year, FONKAR raised a lot of issues, including concerns that President Mills was not in charge of the governance of the nation and should therefore be changed for a more competent person.
That agitation led to FONKAR suggesting that the State was being managed like a "sleeping driver handling a Yutong bus". FONKAR therefore made a strong case to have President Mills replaced by former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings to lead the NDC to the December 2012 polls.
FONKAR also alleged that money was being used to buy the conscience of delegates and party functionaries were engaged in corrupt practices.
Owusu Bempah said all these claims by FONKAR were swept under the carpet as GAME members accused them of causing divisiveness in the party by their comments.
He asked "what went wrong for Dr. Kwabena Adjei to call for urgent meeting among party executives?"
"Those people who took money and voted against Nana Konadu should be ashamed of themselves ...posterity will judge all of us".
The outspoken FONKAR member said with revelations coming out from Mr. Alfred Woyome’s judgment debt scandal, "can the current NDC pass the test of probity, accountability and social justice which are principles of the party"? He argued that such malpractices motivated a young solder (Rawlings) 30 years ago to rise up and embark on a "house cleaning exercise" in the 31st December Revolution.
Owusu Bempah asserted that "President Mills is not a leader who is ready to take risk and not competent enough to put his foot down to ensure that the right thing is done". Meanwhile, the former Brong Ahafo regional Chairman for the NDC, Lawyer Owusu Agyemang said Dr. Kwabena Adjei’s letter to the President indicates that all is not well in the party.
He said if the party was able to resolve issues raised by FONKAR prior to the July congress, this would not have been necessary. Lawyer Owusu Agyemang noted that the ongoing internal conflict in the party has caused deep cracks which need to be resolved with sense of urgency.
However, the National Organizer of the ruling NDC, Yaw Boateng Gyan said the party will soon hold a National Executive meeting to address concerns raised by stakeholders in the party.
