Mahama, Akufo-Addo To Feature In Football Gala At The Accra Sports Stadium
26 August 2013
President John Mahama and New Patriotic Party's 2012 flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo have reportedly confirmed their participation in this year’s "Political Tolerance Soccer Gala", at the Accra Sports Stadium.
They are expected to play together for the Political Parties Team against the Black Stars oldies in the gala on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, two days to the delivery of judgment by the Supreme Court on the election petition.
Organisers of the event, Pro Media Consult say the decision to get the two figures of the two leading political parties in the country to participate in the event, forms part of efforts to propagate peace before and after the judges deliver judgment on the petition challenging John Mahama's presidency.
The "Peace Match 2013" aims to provide the needed catalyst for the country’s crave for peace ahead of the August 29, verdict.
The maiden edition of the Political Tolerance Soccer Gala was held in May, 2012, under the chairmanship of Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi, the President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs and a former member of the Council of State.
Three leaders of the opposition New Patriotic Party - Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey have petitioned the Supreme Court seeking to overturn the outcome of the December 2012 Presidential election.
President Mahama, the Electoral Commission and the NDC are the 1st, 2nd and 3r respondents respectively.
A panel of nine justices of the Supreme Court, after 48 days of hearing and legal maneuverings is set to give its verdict on August 29, 2013.
