Maternal mortality decreases in Birim Central –Health Director

Ghana MidwivesMaternal mortality decreases in Birim Central –

Miss Anastasia Atiogbe, the Municipal Health Director of the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region, has declared that maternal mortality rate in the municipality has been reduced to an appreciable level.

According to Miss Atiogbe, maternal mortality decreased from eight (8) within the first half of 2010 to five (5) within the same period in 2011.

However no maternal deaths have been recorded this year within the same period.

The Municipal Health Director believed the alarming rate is gradually coming to an end due to the pragmatic measures put in place by the health directorate.

The Birim Central municipality until recently had been topping the maternal mortality rate chart in the Eastern Region.

Miss Atiogbe made this known during the commissioning of a community clinic at Akyem Gyadam.

The clinic which was named after former Sanaahene of Akyem Gyadam, Nana Boamah, was built by the Okyeman Union, with assistance from the Ghana Council in Belgium in collaboration with the city of Antwerp, as well as Hollander and Sons and supported by the Gyadam Community Development Fund.

The edifice which cost GH¢40,000 is aimed at enhancing health care in the community.

Mr. Peter Switsers, representative of the city of Antwerp, Belgium, promised their unflinching support to the Gyadam community.

Mr. Kwaku Boamah Acheampong, president of the Ghana Council in Belgium and Head of South Programs of FOS Belgium, has also promised to do everything humanly possible to get health workers from Belgium to come and assist at the clinic.

An ICT center which cost GH¢8,000, fully furnished with computers donated by the Flemish Parliament was also commissioned. The Assembly member of the town William Quaittoo has promised to help the center achieve its intended purpose.

On his part Berima Kwasi Nketia II, Chief of Akyem Gyadam thanked the development partners for the kind gesture. He then promised that the people of Gyadam will make good use of the facility.

The grand durbar held for the commissioning was graced by several people in the community including Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Owusu Boateng, President of the Northern Sector of the Ghana Council Mr. Ahmed Ujjah, CEO of King Solomon Football Club Mr. Solomon Agyin. Others include representative of Hollander and Sons Company Limited Mr. Kojo Appiah Boamah, president of the Ghana Council in Belgium and a host of other dignitaries.
