A group calling itself Platform for Elite Teachers is accusing the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Kofi Sarfo Kantanka, of corruption and mismanagement.

details

Members allege, among others, the education director has received Gh¢100, 000 as bribe from five accountants in order to stay their scheduled transfer.

They say Mr. Sarfo Kantanka’s handling of the administration has rendered the Ghana Education Service in the region dysfunctional.

Some education stakeholders however say the petition is a smear campaign to tarnish the director’s reputation due to his stance against unauthorized fees.

The petition by Platform for Elite Teachers was signed by National President, Samuel Owusu Kankam and General Secretary, Musah De-Graft Colemen.

According to them, Mr. Sarfo Kanatanka has used service funds to buy vehicles for his girlfriends and furnished their offices and bungalows.

The petitioners also allege the regional director grounds service vehicles, collects fuel allocation which he shares to his friends and sells the rest for personal gain.

Other allegations include arbitrary sacking of staff whom he replaces with his lovers and other cronies, piled up work in offices, misplacement of official mails and unattended to promotion forms.

The petitioners will not mention names of the people they have alluded to in the document.

Luv News checks however reveal one of such persons said to have benefited from Mr. Kantanka's alleged maladministration, is Nana Kagyawas, a former accountant at the Bekwai District office of the GES. Another one yet to be identified, has one more year to go.

Nana Kagyawas, however denies ever inducing the Regional Director financially, to stop his transfer while in office.

“I retired on July 1, 2013 so how can I give money to anybody to stop my transfer. I don’t even have such money to give to anyone. I am a retiree now and those things are not true,” he told Luv News.

Mr. Sarfo Kantanka himself will not respond to the allegations but students and some officials at the Regional Education Directorate have come to his defense.

Administrator of the Ashanti Regional Student Representative Council, David Ohene-Amoako accuses the petitioners of seeking to water down his achievement of fighting unauthorized fees by some school authorities.

Public Relations Officer of the Directorate, Cassandra Twum Ampofo and other management staff of the GES describe as blatant lies, allegations against Mr. Sarfo Kantanka.
