Why I Think Prez Mahama Should Have Met With Nana Addo In Ghana

Though many have hailed the reported exchange of pleasantries between President John Daramani Mahama and the leader of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo in a London restaurant as sign of the country’s political tolerance, a member of the communication team of the Progressive People's Party (PPP) believes the meeting should have taken place in Ghana for the needed impact.

According to Charles Owusu, it is not enough for the two leaders to meet outside the country and be polite towards one another and prefers such actions to be continuous so that followers of the two political parties can know the importance of forbearance.

“It’s a nice sight to behold but I am not happy about something. Is it that we do not trust each other as Ghanaians? Must it take Nana Addo and John Mahama to travel and meet in London to indicate to the world that we are united as a nation? I think it should have been done in Ghana because it would have had a greater impact on their followers”.

“How many people would have heard of this, if we had not discussed it, though we now have about three versions of the event,” he added.

The PPP communicator made these comments on the back of a tweet by the Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, announcing that President John Dramani Mahama bumped into Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at a London restaurant.

The 2012 NPP presidential candidate was having lunch at the restaurant of the Hyatt Regency Hotel (The Churchill) located in Central London's West End, adjacent Park Lane when he suddenly saw President John Mahama and his entourage also enter the restaurant to have lunch.

Nana Addo got out of his seat and went to the table of John Mahama and said to him “Hello, Mr President!”, to which President Mahama replied, “Hello Nana Addo.”

After exchanging a few pleasantries, the pair returned to their respective tables.

Nana Addo has been in the news for routine check-up in the United Kingdom receiving treatment of what the ruling NDC calls a ‘heart attack’.

Nana Addo, according to sources, will soon be seen making daily court appearances at the Supreme Court where he together with two others, is contesting the validity of the 2012 elections in which President John Dramani Mahama was announced as winner by the Electoral Commissioner Dr. Afari Gyan.

Nana Addo, according to Peacefmonline.com sources, will return to Ghana on Wednesday, 19th June.
