Withdraw “All Die Be Die” Comment - Group
13 June 2012
Operation Save the Suffering Masses (OSSM), a civil society organisation in Kumasi, has appealed to the National House of Chiefs (NHC) to impress on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to muster courage to withdraw his “all die be die” declaration.
It said as custodians of culture and tradition, Nananom were in a better position to get the leading opposition leader to see reason in withdrawing the declaration.
A statement signed by OSSM spokesman, Nana Kwasi Kwarteng, said Nana Akufo-Addo should realise by now that the declaration could lead to unwanted developments as the nation prepared for elections.
The group noted that it might not be easy for Nana Akufo-Addo to eat back his words but in politics such actions were necessary, especially getting to a crucial election period. Therefore, it is important for him to say, “I withdraw” to end everything.
The statement said as the nation moved into elections, it was incumbent on leading politicians to stop inciting their followers to resort to violence in prosecuting their agenda.
On that score, the statement further expressed regret about the NPP flag-bearer’s alleged admonishing to NPP supporters to protect electoral materials on election day.
This could trigger violence in a situation in which other political parties also decide to protect the electoral materials.
The statement also expressed OSSM’s displeasure about ethnocentric statements that could divide the nation.
