23 September 2012
The chiefs and people of Akyem-Adukrom, near Kibi, in the Eastern Region, on Friday honoured, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, with the royal title Odimafo, for his contribution towards the development of the community.
Barima Opong Ofori II, chief of the town, praised the Minister for ensuring the tarring of the road leading to the town, and supporting the building of a classroom block for Akyem Adukrom Municipal School, where the Minister started his education, and also contributing to the construction of a steel bridge across River Birim.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said, contrary to speculations that the School Feeding Programme was collapsing, the number of beneficiaries had increased from 740,000 to 1,600,000 school children during the almost four years rule of the National Democratic Congress.
He said government had also constructed 2,500 new school blocks, and called on the youth not to abandon schooling for illegal mining.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo called on Ghanaians to uphold the extended family system to ensure effective training of children and social security for the people.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo presented 60,000 Ghana cedis donated to him by his friends and District Chief Executives, from the Eastern, Volta and Central Regions, who attended the event, as seed capital for an endowment fund, initiated to support brilliant but needy school children from the town to complete their education.
Some of his friends at the event contributed another 16,000 Ghana Cedis towards the fund.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo donated eight sewing machines to eight women in the town, who had completed dressmaking apprenticeship, and three sewing equipments, three cameras and instant photo printing machines to the community, for the training of people, under the Local Enterprise Skills Development Programme.
