NDC has lost the debate on free SHS education – Bawumia
10 September 2012
The 2012 Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lost the argument on free SHS education and has therefore resorted to unjustifiable pessimism.
Dr. Bawumia made the comments in Nsawkor in the Tain constituency Sunday while addressing the launch of the NPP’s campaign in the constituency.
Speaking to thousands of vociferous NPP members and sympathizers gathered, Dr. Bawumia stated, “initially when Nana Akufo-Addo promised to make SHS free once elected, the NDC loudly came out to the NPP to bring out the figures which would prove that the promise can be realized.
The NPP as a Party with very capable men and women did not throw out the promise just like that and we took up the challenge of putting out the figures and the breakdown of how we intend to make this pledge not only possible but a success.
We all watched the IEA encounter and saw how Nana Akufo-Addo took his time to walk us through the figures and the breakdown of how the dream would be realized. Since the IEA debate, the NDC has clearly been silenced. It is obvious they have lost the debate.”
Dr. Bawumia noted that after clearly losing the debate, the NDC is left with no other choice than to continue being blindly pessimistic on the pledge with the intention to confuse Ghanaians and keep the status quo which prevents many children in the country from securing quality higher education.
The NPP running mate explained that the NPP was going to make SHS free because that was the way to go. He noted that all countries which have progressed have done so on the basis of a well trained, educated and skilled population, citing the example of the United States which was the first country to have made Secondary school education free.
“I always say that when you vote for the NPP, you are electing a government of possibilities but if you vote for the NDC, you are electing a government of impossibilities and that is why I am urging you all to cast your vote for Nana Akufo-Addo come December 7 to make possible the dream of free SHS education and transforming our Nation.” Dr. Bawumia said
Dr. Bawumia has since September 3 been touring the Brong Ahafo region. The tour has taken him to the Asutifi South, Atebubu – Amanting, Pru, Sene, Nkoranza North, Nkoranza South, Wenchi and Tain constituencies.
Dr. Bawumia was accompanied to the Tain constituency by Sheik T. B. Damba, 2nd National Chairman of the NPP, Moctar Bamba, National Organizer of the NPP, Anthony Karbo, National Youth Organizer, Mr. Stephen Ntim, former Vice-Chairman of the NPP, Madam Rita Asobayere, former National Women’s organizer of the NPP, Mr. Ofori-Amanfo, Parliamentary Candidate for the Tain constituency.
