Stop treating Akufo-Addo like a god – Solomon Nkansah

A senior member of the governing National Democratic Congress says members of the New Patriotic Party need to re-examine the way they perceive their 2012 Presidential Candidate, to save themselves from heartache and face reality.

According to Solomon Nkansah, NDC Deputy National Propaganda Secretary, NPP members see Nana Akufo-Addo “as a god” and would not countenance any comments made about him, whether true or false.

In a heated debate on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Friday April 12, 2013, Solomon Nkansah said Nana Akufo-Addo was not in the same league as Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission – although the two were classmates at the University of Ghana – and it was time NPP members stopped comparing their “defeated presidential candidate” to the man who has conducted “such credible elections.”

Mr Nkansah was protesting the kind of language and accusations being leveled against Dr Afari Gyan by some members of the NPP, who accuse the EC boss of rigging the elections for then NDC candidate John Dramani Mahama and the NDC in the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The NPP, represented by Communications committee member Asamoah Gyamfi pointed out that Nana Akufo-Addo was also at the receiving end of insults and allegations especially on social media platforms such as facebook and twitter, but Solomon Nkansah insists the 2012 NPP candidate “had no role as a defeated opposition candidate” in national affairs, and therefore did not deserve the same reverence as the EC boss.

But pushed by show host Adakabre Frempong Manso, Solomon Nkansah withdrew his comment, conceding that attacks on the nation’s leaders were in bad taste.

Also condemning the insults on the nation’s political landscape is another panelist, Alhaji Alidu Haruna of the NDC, who cited an instance where he received a barrage of insults when he paraphrased on Facebook, the sarcastic greeting ‘me ma mo dumso o,’ which pokes fun at president Mahama and the ongoing load shedding programme, to ‘me ma mo certificateless o’ to reflect the legal challenge Nana Akufo-Addo currently faces over his law certificate.

The experience, he said, was most unpleasant.
