He said Ghana has seen the highest level of economic growth – longest period of micro-economic stability, highest level of international reserve among others - under the leadership of President John Evans Atta Mills.
But the TUC boss, speaking during this year’s May Day celebrations, stated that although these are significant achievements, they have not “put money in peoples' pockets.”
“Your Excellency the reality [is that] the unprecedented growth rate…has failed to create decent jobs for Ghanaians.”
“Joblessness is on the rise. Nearly all new jobs are being created in the informal economy while incomes are low and workers have very little protection from the country’s labour laws.”
He added that young graduates are not finding jobs because the nation’s policies are based on the exploitation of natural resources which do not create jobs. The TUC Secretary General stated that policy makers over the years have failed to address the monumental challenges that confront domestic industries, “compelling many of our manufacturing firms to convert their factories to warehouses as they join the lucrative import trade.”
Joblessness among the youth constitutes the biggest challenge to national peace and stability, he opined, stating: “we expect improvement in the economic and social circumstances of the people of Ghana when the economy is doing well. The people of Ghana should feel it in their pockets.”
To improve the economic conditions of the populace, the TUC boss insisted that the “economic growth and its associated micro economic stability must translates into the creation of quality jobs for the people.”
“Employment generating growth is the only sustainable way to stem poverty, social exclusion and foster inclusive development,” he remarked.
