Konadu’s man leaves NDP, endorses Akufo-Addo
A founding member and acting spokesperson of the party reportedly set up by former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has announced his resignation, and gone ahead to endorse the presidential candidate of the main opposition NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo.
The National Democratic Party (NDP) was formed by mainly breakaway members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr Akwasi Ofei Agyemang told listeners of Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Thursday October 4, 2012 that his decision was premised on a number of factors, including the inability of the NDP leadership to analyse its resources and focus on priorities.
The leadership had also failed to take firm decisions on the way forward, he alleged.
"After receiving the certificate from the EC, I thought we (NDP executive) would analyse our resources and prioritise. But this has not happened. Even a Congress to elect a flagbearer has been postponed twice.
Every party must have consensus, especially among the national executive committee on priorities. My priority is to get focus on winning more parliamentary seats, but the others disagree… things have happened too many times to be ignored.
I hinted the National Chairman yesterday through text (message), but I have drafted my resignation letter," Dr. Offei Agyemang stated.
Commenting on the upcoming elections, Dr Ofei Agyemang, who stood on the ticket of the NDC in the 2008 elections in the Ayawaso Central constituency, declared: “I’m dead sure that Nana Akufo-Addo should take the election.”
He argued that the NPP was poised to win the December poll, primarily because of its democratic credentials, epitomized through the expansion of the party’s Electoral College to over 115,000 as opposed to the approximately 3000 that voted for President Mills last year and the less than 3000 that endorsed President Mahama last month.
As well, Nana Akufo-Addo’s promise of providing free education “that people say is not possible,” as well as his plans to make West Africa and Africa as a whole economically independent shows he is a visionary, he maintained.
He chastised the NDC for pouring cold water on Akufo-Addo’s free education proposal, saying ‘I’m at a loss as to how people in government do not know how to create wealth’ to fund such a programme.
Reached for comment, acting Deputy Communications Director of the NDP, Ernest Owusu Bempah said Dr Ofei Agyemang’s resignation was ‘not a surprise’, but it would not take anything away from the party’s vision.
“Dr Ofei Agyemang is an individual, and we respect his decision, but this is not going to do anything to our party,” he confidently declared.
