MPs Divided On IEA's Degree Requirement

Photo ReportingMPs Divided On IEA's Degree Requirement

Members of Ghana’s Parliament appear divided over suggestions for persons vying to become law makers to have a university degree as a minimum educational background.

The Institute of Economic Affairs in a survey noted that most people interviewed wished their MPs have a high level of educational qualification.

They proposed university degree as a minimum, but this suggestion has been met with varied opinions within parliament.

Already the majority leader in Parliament, Cletus Avoka supports the idea but believes there no need making it compulsory.

His opposite side, the minority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu also told XYZ News, that he supports the idea but thinks it should extend to the Executive Arm of Government as well.

But, NDC MP for Sege, Alfred Abayateye opposes the suggestion and wonders how securing a University degree could make an MP a good law maker.

“Let me make this clear, knowledge is not in a University degree, Knowledge is not in books and we don’t take we would lose our best materials.

“The people, who drew the 1992 constitution for Ghana which has been acclaimed as one of the best constitutions in the World, are they all intellectuals, were they all graduates” Mr. Abayateye queried.
