Dr. BawumiaJudgment Debt Is Robbery - Dr. Bawumia

27 August 2012

The running mate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that the talk about judgment debts in their campaign messages ahead of Election 2012 is not intended to score political points, but to make it known to the people of Ghana that the issue should be considered as a robbery and theft of the resources from the poor in Ghana.

Engaging the nation in an open discussion on his vision for the country using Google’s new platform, Google+ Hangouts on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, Dr. Bawumia stated that “the judgment debt issue is a serious issue.

"It is not about scoring political points, it’s really about robbery, and it’s about theft of resources from the poor people who live in places like old Fadama.”

According to him, the monies paid should not be considered as judgment debts because “they are debts that people got paid for no work done. And we settled to pay these debts whether you are talking about Woyome or Construction Pioneers or Waterville.”

He said the NPP is expressing rightful indignation regarding what has gone on “because the opportunity cost of these types of judgment debts is huge.”

Dr. Bawumia hence called for transparency and accountability and the immediate passage into law of the Right to Information Bill.

He said: “We have in our manifesto that we are going to require the publication of all claims on government on a six monthly basis and whatever settlements have been made. We need to get information out so that government can be held accountable.”

He also called for the strengthening of the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General’s Department “so that they are well paid and well resourced so they can also do their work well.”

The NPP Vice Presidential candidate is the first political figure in Ghana to engage the nation in an open discussion on his vision for the country using Google’s new platform, Google+ Hangouts On Air.

The Google Hangouts on Air platform was launched in Ghana last week and Citi FM is the first station in Africa to have pioneered this innovative way of communicating with listeners and viewers.
