Akufo-Addo Alma Mater In Ruins
09 January 2015
THE FIRST Public School built in Ghana, Akropong Presbyterian Primary School, established in 1843 by the colonial masters in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern region is in grave distress.
School authorities have called on old students to support their alma mater to help fix teething challenges facing the institution to enable it deliver quality education.
The old students include father of 2016 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, Edward Akufo-Addo, Okuapemhene Oseadeeyo Addo-Danquah and current Member of Parliament for Akropong, W.O. Boafo among others.
This was said by the resident minister of the Akropong Peace Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Kingsley Kumi-Yeboah during the yuletide season when eleven selected basic schools in the Akuapem North Municipality including Akropong School for the Blind and the Mampong School for the Deaf gathered to celebrate the occasion.
Speaking to the media, the resident minister of the church, Rev. Kingsley Kumi-Yeboah appealed to old students most of who are now occupying top positions in the country to come to the aid of the school to save it from sinking.
He added that even though the school has seen renovation, it still lacks infrastructure and logistics that enhance effective teaching and learning materials.
He added that, achieving quality education is a holistic responsibility by government, teachers, parents and the general public.
“Therefore there is the need for a collective contribution by stakeholders to help build quality education.”
Mrs. Gladys Amoako-Yerenkyi, Senior Presbyter of the Akropong Presbyterian Church, Peace Congregation, was worried over the dwindling level of discipline in the Akuapem ridge area.
She called for the need to assimilate school pupils with the fear of God in tandem with the knowledge being imparted in order to make them responsible citizens in future.
She urged parents not to shirk their responsibility of providing for the educational needs of their wards in the hands of government, but invest as stakeholders to augment the effort of government in achieving quality education.
