Dr Kwabena AdjeiKwabena Adjei threatens to sue accusers over "Mills tape"

29 June 2012

The chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Adjei has threatened to take legal action to prove that he has not commented about the ailment or the rumored death of President Mills.

According to Dr Kwabena Adjei, he has neither granted any interviews on radio nor spoken privately about the President’s state of health, so he doubts the source or authenticity of the contents of a tape on which he is reported to have said that, rumours about the death of the president started from the Castle.

A tape recording has been circulating in the media with a voice purported to be that of the NDC National Chairman claiming that people close to and at the Castle were responsible for planning and executing rumours of the President’s death for their own selfish agenda.

Reactions from within the NDC and without have been swift with some condemning him for the statements while others have expressed their disbelief that the voice is authentic.

A member of the NDC’s Communications team, Dela Edem on Adom FM’s political programme, Dea Mehunu hosted by Afia Pokua said he was suspicious about the source of the tape adding that it could have been doctored.

He asked Dr Kwabena Agyei to come out and clear the air adding until that is done, he was reluctant to believe that the Chairman could have made the statements he is alleged to have made on the tape adding that, the emergence of the tape could be part of a mischievous plan by the NPP to divert attention.

The opposition NPP which had been accused of masterminding those rumours by some NDC stalwarts has latched onto the issue and is making political capital out of it.

Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Sammy Awuku also said the NPP had been vindicated by the new revelations and the tape.

He said it was unnecessary to play politics with the president’s health and that was why their Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo had issued a statement to wish the president well on routine check-up trip, adding that even though there were no malicious intentions, the NDC chastised him for that.

Sammy Awuku said it was more critical for the NDC to do an introspection of itself to find out those who stand to benefit from the demise of the president and stop pointing accusing fingers at the NPP.

He also expressed shock at the NDC for doubting Dr Kwabena Agyei’s tape recording adding that it is surprising that it was based on a similar tape recording that the national executives of the NDC suspended its Deputy General Secretary, Kofi Adams.

However on Adom News Thursday, when the tape was played back to Dr Kwabena Adjei, he said he could neither deny nor acknowledge that the voice was his, adding that the only conversation he remembered having about the President’s health was with President Mills himself where he mentioned that this was the President’s ‘third resurrection’.

The NDC chairman said he is not a small boy, neither is he an immature politician to make such useless comments insisting that he has received a copy of the said tape recording, and is seeking advice on the action to take to prove his innocence.
