Akufo-Addo consoles Aliu Mahama’s wife, suspends campaign
16 November 2012
The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has sent his condolences to the family of former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, especially his wife Hajia Ramatu Mahama on his demise this morning.
As a sign of his respect, Nana Akufo-Addo has suspended his three day campaign tour of the Eastern Region until further notice.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama passed away on Friday November 16, 2012 at the Korle bu teaching hospital after suffering a massive cardiac arrest.
Nana Akufo-Addo, who received the news at Anyinam in the Atiwa East constituency after he had finished addressing NPP supporters, returned to Bunso and briefed the media on the former vice president’s death before heading to Accra.
‘I visited him on Sunday in the hospital and he was unconscious. Frankly when I left the hospital I did so with a great deal of anxiety and concern when I saw his condition. It’s been confirmed to me that earlier this morning his (Alhaji Aliu Mahama) maker called him to his side.
‘It’s a sad day in the history of our country; this is a man who gave a good account of himself in the public service,’ Nana Addo said.
He described Alhaji Aliu Mahama as a man who was a dependable and loyal supporter of President Kufuor, his government and the NPP as a whole.
‘We all cherished and valued his counsel and intervention whenever we met to discuss the affairs of our nation.
‘We have lost an outstanding Ghanaian. A man who has succeeded in his chosen profession as an engineer, a contractor and then migrated from that into full time politics. He was a loyal and dedicated member of the Danquah- Dombo-Busia tradition; he was very quick to do whatever he could to advance the fortunes of our party and advance the welfare of the people of Ghana,’ Nana Addo told the press.
‘It’s been my wish that he could live and witness our victory hopefully in December but matters like this can be best explained by the God Almighty.
‘It’s a trying moment for his wife Hajia Ramatu and the family. I’m using this medium to send my deepest condolence to his family especially the wife Hajia Ramatu Mahama, and also president Kufuor, the NPP fraternity and Ghanaians at large.
‘We pray that the almighty will forgive him his sins and grant him a place in heaven till we met.
‘Because of the circumstances, I’m suspending my campaign in the Eastern Region until further notice.
