Bishop Weeps Over Kumasi-Accra Road

THE FOUNDER and leader of Liberty Global Christian Church, Bishop Prince Hampel has bemoaned the poor state of the Apedwa portion of the Accra-Kumasi road.

{sidebar id=10 align=right} He said he was worried because the nation continues to lose thousands of Ghana cedis due to the impassable nature of that stretch of road.

The international evangelist in an interview with DAILY GUIDE wondered why the government had not taken pragmatic measures to address this nagging problem.

Bishop Hampel contended that the number of hours travelers spent on that portion of the road due to its poor nature did not only cost the nation huge sums of money but also made their journey uncomfortable.

He noted that transport owners had to spend huge sums of money maintaining their vehicles because of the bad nature of the road.

The man of God stated that it was unfair for travelers who paid their taxes as citizens of the country had to go through hell when travelling from the nation’s capital to the second capital, Kumasi.

Bishop Hampel indicated that it was about time President Mills realized the difficulties travelers faced, noting that the president should direct the Ministry of Roads to put the road in good shape.

The International evangelist wondered why government will contend that there were no funds to speed up construction of the road when it could afford to purchase five aircrafts.

Bishop Hampel enjoined President Mills to reduce the number of aircrafts the government was buying to three so that the money for the remaining two could be used for the completion of the road.

“I am not against the buying of five aircrafts but if the government is saying that there are no funds to complete the road, then I will suggest we buy three aircrafts and keep the money for the remaining two to complete the road.”

He stressed that using that money for the completion of the road will be more beneficial to the country.

“How many of us would have the opportunity to sit in the aircrafts we are going to buy? But if the road is put in good shape, many people will benefit because many people travel by road from Accra-Kumasi and vice versa,” Bishop Hampel observed.

The construction of the Accra-Kumasi road was started by the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration under the headship of ex-President Kufuor via Internally Generated Funds (IGF).

When the NPP government was leaving office on January 6, 2009, most of the road had been completed, leaving the Apedwa portion which was still under construction.

Many thought that with much of the work done by the previous government, the current administration would pursue construction of the remaining portion, but for over two years into the administration of President Mills, nothing concrete has been done about it.

When Ghanaians raised concerns about the non completion of the road which has brought untold hardship to road users, the government’s response was that there were no funds to continue the project.

Five reported dead in Eastern Region floods

Five people have been reported dead after the Birim River in the Eastern Region broke its banks for the second time in less than two weeks.

Several others have been displaced with communities, farms and properties all submerged.

Atiwa, Kade, Fantiakwa districts all in the Eastern Region are said to be worst hit.

Regional Minister Dr. Kwesi Apea–Kubi told Joy News the situation is terrible.

"Yesterday the Birim River was filled to the brim. It has broken its banks at Atiwa… At Kade the flood has filled nearly about five-to-six size football pitch," he said.

"There was no way anybody could pass through.” The minister described.

He said more than 50 houses have been submerged, adding, for a moment he thought he was in the Afram plains.

The minister advised residents who are yet to be affected by the floods but who are closer to the affected areas to evacuate as soon as possible.

“Those who happen to be near it, please begin to evacuate because the volume of water that is coming down stream is such that if you do not preempt and take action to avert any harmful effect both to human and property, we are going to be all sorry for it,” he said.

"Sooner or later the volume of water is going to reach wherever they live," he warned.

Eastern Region floods: Nana Addo makes rallying call for support

The New Patriotic Party Presidential candidate Nana Akufo Addo is calling for immediate supply of relief items to flood victims in the Eastern Region.

He has therefore urged government to work closely with NADMO to ensure the needs of the victims are met.

Five people have been reported dead after heavy down pour filled the Birim River beyond its boundaries and flooded several other communities.

Over 50 houses have submerged, properties and farm lands destroyed, Regional Minister Dr. Appiah Kubi confirmed in an interview with Joy News.

Nana Akufo Addo told Joy News: “It is a tragedy for all those affected and what you have to pray for these times is that they put their faith in the Almighty; continue to believe that even in the face of this disaster there are better times ahead of them.”

He said all hands must be on deck to help the victims.

“The public authorities must obviously do the best they can, especially NADMO, various Members of Parliament who come from the areas affected. All of them are to work together and make sure they can bring relief to those who have been affected by this big tragedy.”

“I am just hoping that not only will the floods abate rapidly but that the urgent relief will be brought to those who are there, the displaced,” he noted,

He further stated that it is about time that we sat down as a country to think about a lasting solution to stem such a tragedy from happening again.

Drug Allegations Against Nana Addo…Lawyers Poised For Legal Action

Lawyers of Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, standard bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have affirmed that they are considering a legal action against the Daily Post newspaper and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have accused him (Nana Addo) of smoking ‘wee’ or using other narcotic drugs.

Nana Asante Bediatuo, one of the legal luminaries from Ampem Chambers, in an interview with this paper via telephone, noted that “perhaps, a redress at the court will bring an end to the falsehood perpetrated against the NPP flagbearer.”

Nana Bediatuo described a publication on the front page of the Daily Post, which appeared in the Thursday, 21 July, 2011 edition - having been first published in the Ghana Palaver in the heat of the 2008 electioneering campaigns - as “a fabricated story.” Yesterday, Daily Post alleged that Nana Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the NPP at that time, was a ‘wee’ smoker.

“The story was first published in the Ghana Palaver in 2008 during the elections. This led to the establishment of an investigation team to verify its authenticity in the United States, but nothing was found out regarding the alleged arrest of Nana Akufo-Addo at JFK Airport possessing wee,” he stated.

He continued, “The legal team of Nana Addo - that’s Ampem Chambers - then put out a statement to debunk the story and how it had been fabricated.” Nana Bediatuo recalled that a few months after releasing their statement, the pro-NDC newspapers came out with another story accusing Nana Akufo-Addo of using drugs and when they were challenged to arrest him since the NDC had assumed power, the issue died down.

“I want to make this point clear, Nana Addo has never been arrested at the John F Kennedy International Airport for possessing wee and it has never been established in any US document or report that Nana Addo was arrested at JFK. Nana Addo has never smoked wee or dealt in any drug; and it’s amazing how these nation wreckers are doing everything to destroy his reputation. This will not work; we shall deal with them appropriately,” he emphasized.

“In the United States, nobody is above the law, the moment you commit a crime you will be dealt with appropriately. So it is clear that these people are perpetrating falsehood in an attempt to shift the attention of the NPP flagbearer from his ‘listening campaign,’” Nana Bediatuo stated.

The legal gem recalled that even Dominique Strauss Khan, the former Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who was arrested in the United States of America for allegedly raping a hotel staff could not escape prosecution and so why should Nana Addo be freed if indeed what the NDC functionaries are saying is true?

He recalled that it was initially speculated that Nana Akufo-Addo was a cocaine addict, then a drug dealer, “today they are saying he is a wee smoker; I don’t think these people should be taken serious. Ghanaians should ignore their empty statements and believe in Nana Addo, who is getting ready to improve their living conditions after 2012.”

The Daily Post quoted the Africa Watch Magazine in its July edition as stating that a high profile Ghanaian politician was arrested at the JFK Airport for possessing Indian hemp (also known as ‘wee’).

It alleged that it had long been established that Nana Akufo-Addo was the politician busted at the JFK Airport as published in the Africa Watch. The paper however, could not establish its source.
