NDC Chair’s letter vindicates Rawling - Owusu Bempah

A leading member of Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings (FONKAR) Ernest Owusu Bempah says the NDC Chairman’s letter to President Mills has vindicated former President Rawlings’ claim that the government is made up of “greedy bastards”.

In the run up to NDC congress held in Sunyani in July 2011, Flt. Lt. Rawlings accused President Mils of being surrounded by what he termed “greedy bastards” who are looting the state.

Owusu Bempah recounted how Rawlings warned President Mills to be wary of such people but this advice apparently fell on deaf ears as people perceived to be loyal to the incumbent president castigated the ex-president.

Commenting on a letter written by Dr. Kwabena Adjei to President Mills in which the NDC chairman expressed his concerns about how to resolve creeping factionalism in the ruling party, Owusu Bempah stated on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday that it is too late to write such a letter.

Owusu Bempah said prior to the NDC congress in July last year, FONKAR raised a lot of issues, including concerns that President Mills was not in charge of the governance of the nation and should therefore be changed for a more competent person.

That agitation led to FONKAR suggesting that the State was being managed like a "sleeping driver handling a Yutong bus". FONKAR therefore made a strong case to have President Mills replaced by former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings to lead the NDC to the December 2012 polls.

FONKAR also alleged that money was being used to buy the conscience of delegates and party functionaries were engaged in corrupt practices.

Owusu Bempah said all these claims by FONKAR were swept under the carpet as GAME members accused them of causing divisiveness in the party by their comments.

He asked "what went wrong for Dr. Kwabena Adjei to call for urgent meeting among party executives?"

"Those people who took money and voted against Nana Konadu should be ashamed of themselves ...posterity will judge all of us".

The outspoken FONKAR member said with revelations coming out from Mr. Alfred Woyome’s judgment debt scandal, "can the current NDC pass the test of probity, accountability and social justice which are principles of the party"? He argued that such malpractices motivated a young solder (Rawlings) 30 years ago to rise up and embark on a "house cleaning exercise" in the 31st December Revolution.

Owusu Bempah asserted that "President Mills is not a leader who is ready to take risk and not competent enough to put his foot down to ensure that the right thing is done". Meanwhile, the former Brong Ahafo regional Chairman for the NDC, Lawyer Owusu Agyemang said Dr. Kwabena Adjei’s letter to the President indicates that all is not well in the party.

He said if the party was able to resolve issues raised by FONKAR prior to the July congress, this would not have been necessary. Lawyer Owusu Agyemang noted that the ongoing internal conflict in the party has caused deep cracks which need to be resolved with sense of urgency.

However, the National Organizer of the ruling NDC, Yaw Boateng Gyan said the party will soon hold a National Executive meeting to address concerns raised by stakeholders in the party.

NPP trashes EOCO report, insists it’s a cover-up for Mills and co

The opposition New Patriotic Party has rejected the interim report of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on the Woyome saga.

The party says the report only confirms the party’s reservations that the EOCO investigation was only meant to be “simply a smoke screen, charade, and a calculated attempt to cover up the involvement of the President, some of his Ministers and other Government officials in this sordid affair.”

A statement signed by NPP chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and issued Tuesday said the “EOCO was, and still is the wrong forum to investigate this matter if the truth should be revealed.”

Among other reasons for rejecting the report, the party says it is reliably informed that from the same Woyome bank account, from which EOCO identified the payment of GHC400, 000.00 to the wife of the Chief State Attorney, other payments of equal if not more pronounced importance were made.

These payments, according to the party, were made to “high-ranking Government officials and prominent NDC Executives,” and it is not surprised the Report is quiet on those payments, since from the outset it was an orchestrated attempt to cover up organised official corruption of proportions never witnessed before in the history of our dear Nation.

Below is the statement by the NPP RESPONSE TO INTERIM REPORT OF ECONOMIC AND ORGANISED CRIME OFFICE (EOCO)ON WOYOME SAGA BY THE NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY On Thursday 2nd February 2012, the Executive Secretary of the EOCO presented what he termed as an 'Interim Report' to President John Evans Atta Mills.

After reviewing the Report, we regret to note that it clearly confirms our initial reservation about the participation of EOCO in this matter.

To reiterate our earlier position, we stated in our statement of 10th January 2012, that the by the President to EOCO to intervene in the matter was simply a smoke screen, charade, and a calculated attempt to cover up the involvement of the President, some of his Ministers and other Government officials in this sordid affair.

It is our considered opinion that EOCO was, and still is the wrong forum to investigate this matter if the truth should be revealed. Even to the casual observer, the EOCO Report cannot be taken seriously, and when subjected to critical analysis it collapses like a pack of cards.

The Report is made up of half-truths, inherent contradictions, inconsistencies, lies, unfounded innuendos and baseless speculation. We totally reject the Report, for amongst other things, the following reasons. 1. Whilst the President has publicly pronounced his ignorance of the whole affair, we are suddenly told by EOCO that he intervened and even sought to stop payments to Woyome. However, the Report is silent on critical questions such as:

• WHEN DID THE PRESIDENT KNOW OF THE ILLEGAL PAYMENT?

• WHO TOLD THE PRESIDENT ABOUT THE ILLEGAL PAYMENT?

• HOW DID THE PRESIDENT ATTEMPT TO STOP THE ILLEGAL PAYMENT?

• WHOM DID THE PRESIDENT INSTRUCT NOT TO HONOUR THE ILLEGAL PAYMENT?

• WHAT DID THE PRESIDENT DO WHEN THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE IGNORED?

2. We have reliable information that from the same ill-gotten Woyome bank account, from which EOCO identified the payment of GHC400, 000.00 to the wife of the Chief State Attorney, other payments of equal if not more pronounced importance were made.

These payments were made to high-ranking Government officials and prominent NDC Executives. We are not surprised that the Report is quiet on these payments, since from the outset it was an orchestrated attempt to cover up organised official corruption of proportions never witnessed before in the history of our dear Nation.

At the appropriate time we shall present to the people of Ghana a detailed analysis of this apology of a report. Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey (National Chairman)

Gov't responds to NDC Chair Kwabena Adjei's leaked letter

The government has responded to what it calls the leakage of letter written by the governing NDC's Chairman, Dr Kwabena Adjei and addressed to president Mills.

A statement issued by Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said, "The attention of President John Evans Atta Mills has been drawn to media reports about a letter addressed to him and authored by NDC Chairman Dr. Kwabena Adjei.

"The President wishes to state that upon receiving the letter on the 10th of January, 2012, he immediately thereafter met with the Chairman of the NDC for which issues raised in the said letter were discussed.

"It is also important to note that the issues discussed had nothing to do with the ‘Woyome Affair’ as is being speculated by sections of the media.

"It is not clear what the motive of whoever leaked this letter to the press is, but President Mills wishes to assure all Ghanaians especially members of the NDC that there is no cause for alarm and that as leader of the NDC he will continue to work in the best interest of our great nation and our dear party," the statement ended.
