A Swedish website, Aftonbladet is reporting that the police in that country have arrested man in connection of the stealing of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s crown jewels in Norway.

NDC Too Corrupt – Konadu Rawlings

The PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has said there is endemic corruption in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) founded by her husband, former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Nana Konadu said corruption was on the ascendancy in the NDC administration, lamenting that the country’s resources were being drained at a fast rate by selfish politicians.

Speaking on Kessben FM yesterday, she said she was upset about the fact that people who, about four years ago, had to sell their houses in order to raise some money to survive could now live affluent lifestyles whilst those that voted for them to be in office were wallowing in poverty. Nana Konadu asked, “Where did they get their money from that they could not live flashy lifestyles before now?”

{sidebar id=10 align=right}The NDP flagbearer, who sounded confident of winning the December polls, alleged that the fact that corruption was the order of the day in the President Mahama led-administration was no longer a secret, insisting that the country needed a change in direction.

Nana Konadu lamented about the present situation whereby people became fabulously rich soon after their political party had won power.

She debunked speculations that her party was working with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) behind the scenes primarily to unseat the NDC in the December polls.

She stated that the NDP, as a political party, had come to stay, pointing out that there was no collaboration or ties between the NDP, which had been formed on the ideals of probity, accountability and social justice, and the largest opposition NPP.

The NDP flagbearer stressed that the NDP was stronger to win the coming polls via its own efforts and implement better policies and programmes to stop corruption, which was rampant in the government currently.

Since the NDP, which was formed about three months ago, had a successful congress at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi last Saturday, detractors of the young political party, notably the NDC, had been alleging that the NPP’s efforts made the congress successful.

The Ashanti Regional secretary of the NDC, Joseph Yammin, claimed that information available to him indicated that NPP supporters who were clad in NDP T-shirts were ferried to fill up the stadium.

Nana Konadu said the NDP was more vibrant at the grassroots.

The President of the 31st December Women’s Movement stated that she did not meet any official of the NPP prior to forming the NDP, stressing that there was no connection between her party, an offshoot of the NDC, and the largest opposition political party.

Ambition

Nana Konadu also debunked rumours that she had nursed presidential ambitions since 1999 when her husband, Jerry John Rawlings, was in the twilight of his second and final term in political office.

She disclosed that several people in the NDC that detested Mr. Rawlings’s choice of the late Prof. Mills as the NDC flagbearer in the 2000 elections approached her to contest the presidential seat on the NDC ticket in 2000.

According to her, those NDC gurus that pressured her to contest the presidency, assured her of their staunch support then, but she flatly rejected their offer with the excuse that as a wife, she wanted to stay out of the political front in order to have time for her husband who was about to exit political power after 19 years.

Nana Konadu, who did not mention names, said most of those people that pressured her in 1999 had turned to accuse her of having presidential ambitions since 1999, saying, “I will mention their names in my book which will be published later on.”

Explains Ambition

She explained that her sudden change of mind to contest the presidency was influenced by the fact that the current NDC administration had deviated from the principles of transparency, accountability, probity and social justice.

According to Nana Konadu, the country was now being driven into an abyss due to the bad leadership style exhibited by the NDC government and as a true and loyal citizen of the land, she was offering herself to contest the polls and restore the country to the path of prosperity.

Akufo-Addo wanted to kill Rawlings in 2008 – Yamoah Ponko

A senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Afrifa Yamoah Ponko, has accused the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo of sending armed men to kill former President Rawlings in Kumasi four years ago.

According to Mr Yamoah Ponko, who is also the Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu-Juaben in the Ashanti Region, he was personally present at the Golden Tulip Hotel when the armed men stormed the hotel in late 2008 and it took the intervention of persons close by to foil the plot.

He made the allegation on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show of October 15, 2012 while contributing to discussions on the endorsement of former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings as flagbearer of the breakaway National Democratic Party at the weekend.

The former Ashanti region head of the National Health Insurance Scheme expressed surprise at the actions of former President Rawlings, particularly his recent meeting with the NPP flagbearer.

“I want to say it today for all Ghanaians to know: 2008 at the Golden Tulip formerly City Hotel Kumasi Nana Akufo-Addo and his people, armed men, came there looking for Jerry Rawlings to kill him. I was there, and it was only God who saved you (Rawlings)…

“I made a lot of noise about it before the 2008 elections. I believe if your time to die has not come, no one can kill you,” he declared.

He wondered what had suddenly come over Mr Rawlings, now consorting with the man who, together with former President Kufuor, ‘did not allow you and your wife to breathe freely’ during the NPP’s term of office, and but for the vigilance of NDC supporters and sympathizers, former president Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo would have jailed Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings in Ghana.

Nevertheless, the NDC had only grown stronger after the apparent defection of the Rawlingses, Mr Ponko said, and called on members of the party to close ranks and ensure President Mahama wins a one-touch victory with “53%” of the vote.

Also commenting, the Editor of the Al-Hajj newspaper, Alhaji bature Idrissu, has claimed that he saved former president Rawlings from being jailed about 6 years ago.

While declining to give details, a charged Bature insisted Mr Rawlings was not as clean as he would want the world to believe.

“You are not a saint, President Rawlings. You know it! I will not sit down for you to destroy the memory of President Mills...I want Rawlings to come out and say I did not save him from going to jail and I will bring out the details. There are living witnesses who can attest to this."
