GIPC Board in crunch meeting over Volunteer for Mahama cash
27 November 2012
The governing board of the Ghana Investments Promotion CCentre (GIPC) is expected to hold a crunch meeting in a bid to unravel a case where the Centre is alleged to have funded activities of Volunteers for Mahama (VFM), a group seeking the interest of John Mahama in the December polls.
The John Mahama 2012 Campaign team has not only distanced itself from the said group, but has also faulted the actions of GIPC, saying it violated the Political Parties Act (Act 574). It also gave the group a 24-hour ultimatum to refund the monies it has taken in the name of President John Mahama.
A Daily Guide report on Monday, November 26, 2012 published a signed cheque from the Council to the group.
The Chief Executive Officer of GIPC, George Aboagye, who himself is the NDC parliamentary candidate for Ahanta West would not confirm or deny the payment except to say investigations have begun.
The statement issued by John Mahama's campaign office said "We further would like to bring to the attention of all sympathizers, campaigners and affiliates of the NDC that soliciting funds from State Organizations is unacceptable, unethical and we believe not to be in line with the tenets of the Political Parties Act (Act 574)".
The statement concluded that "We take a very serious view of this conduct and consider it to be unacceptable and we advise all those who are working for the success of our campaign in the 2012 elections to take note of this directive".
